Jupiter, a DTC hair care brand that launched into the category in 2020, has added a new supplement to its product lineup. Its new Daily Scalp Essential Supplement is billed as proprietary formula that is said to balance the scalp microbiome and encourage healthy hair growth.

Unlike other scalp supplements on the market, Jupiter contends the regimen is a simple, “two medium-sized capsules a day dose” that leaves no aftertaste nor contains fillers like sugar or gelatin.

At the crux of the launch is the idea that scalp discomfort—like dry scalp and dandruff—is a function of genetic or lifestyle factors with one of those factors being the diet.

“Oftentimes, deficiencies in certain vitamins and nutrients can lead to skin irritation. The scalp is an extension of the face, and in similar fashion, your scalp can be impacted by what goes in your body as much as what you put on your body,” said Robbie Salter, founder and co-CEO of Jupiter.

When the scalp is irritated, there's a chain reaction leading to other common concerns such as dryness, itchiness and flakes but also hair loss/fall and increased breakage, Salter insisted.

Jupiter’s supplement is intended to balance the scalp, in turn, helping to promote a moisturized scalp, prevent irritation, avoid breakage and encourage hair growth. It was formulated with clinical-strength ingredients through “meticulous research, understanding their benefits and their potential impact on the scalp,” he told Happi.

“When we see someone experiencing scalp discomfort, it’s typically not caused by a singular source. There’s a holistic approach that should be taken to actively relieve irritation and treat it, but also to proactively prevent it from continuing,” said Salter.

Jupiter’s Daily Scalp Essential works together with the brand’s topical products to “nip scalp discomfort in the bud from each stage of occurrence,” Salter noted.

Salter created Jupiter with Ross Goodhart, a fellow graduate of the University of Michigan, and Alexa Adler. They set out to disrupt the dandruff category with an indie brand that sold products direct to consumers.

As an indie company, Jupiter has had a solid year, albeit with some growing pains, the executive told Happi.

“2022 was a year of strong growth for Jupiter. It wasn’t without its challenges, however, in that we saw tremendous demand—and ultimately stocked out of—our two top sellers, our Balancing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner,” recalled Salter.

Jupiter’s Balancing Shampoo is OTC and Nourishing Conditioner is a non-OTC conditioner intended to be used scalp-to-tip.

Looking Ahead

According to Salter, in 2023 Jupiter plans to “double-down” on its commitment to addressing scalp discomfort in all its forms. To that end, he said the company will address scalp issues from dandruff, via an overproduction of oil from the sebaceous gland, or dry scalp as well as the “sources that cause that scalp discomfort by prioritizing science and efficacy.”

Although he kept details close to the vest, Salter said the company has plans, and “completed formulas for a number of innovative new products not seen on the market today.”
